1984 Women In Film Awards In Ungaro
Barbra Streisand wore this pink Emanuel Ungaro suit while speaking at the May 31, 1984 Women In Film Awards luncheon, where she accepted her Crystal Award. Women in Film was founded in 1973 by Tichi Wilkerson, owner of the Hollywood Reporter, and has been presenting the Crystal Awards since 1977. During her speech, Barbra took aim at female movie critics who panned her recent film ‘Yentl”, saying the “petty, superficial quality of their reviews reflected their jealousy.” “I wanted women to review my film, but the harshest comments were made by women. I was surprised by the petty, superficial quality of the criticism,” she said. “It started me thinking about women’s jealousy of other women.”

Miss Streisand said she knew that at functions like the awards luncheon she was supposed to discuss women supporting women, “but I want to talk about women against women.” At a news conference before the luncheon she said, ‘Sexism is pandemic in the film industry,’ and said it had hurt her career and her life.
She agreed that her failure to receive an Oscar nomination for “Yentl”, which she produced, co-wrote, directed and starred in, was also partially due to sexism, but “I feel it was actually more beneficial not to be nominated. It brought the lack of women filmmakers to the fore … or maybe people didn’t like the film. Why is it men are permitted to be obsessed about their work, but why is it only permitted for women to be obsessed about men?” she questioned.

Barbra has worn Ungaro many times in the course of her career. He is a (now retired) French designer who founded his fashion house in 1965. His Italian upbringing and love of the country side led to his use of a wide range of colors, and he used a vast variety of fabrics, prints and textures with an impeccable cutting technique. Since selling his label in 2005 for $84 million, it has switched designer hands several times and is now headed by creative director Marco Colagrossi.
Barbra’s two piece pink suit features a single breasted jacket with notched wide lapel and shoulder pads. It has a two rose quartz button closure, a curved hemline, and two curved patch pockets. The sleeves feature four spaced silk buttons at each wrist. The skirt has one single inverted box pleat with a zipper closure. Barbra paired this with an Ungaro black floral brooch, fishnet tights, black pumps and a black lace camisole.
