1995 Emmy Awards Donna Karan Gown
Barbra Streisand wore this custom Donna Karan gown to the Emmy awards on Sept 10th, 1995. On this night Barbra was nominated for four Emmy awards for her HBO special “Barbra Streisand, The Concert”. In her first wins since 1965, she took home two Emmy’s for both “Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special”, and “Outstanding Individual Performance In A Variety Or Music Program”. During her acceptance speech, Barbra said “The last time that I won one of these was thirty years ago for my first television special, so I can tell you it was very thrilling then and it’s just as thrilling now. Even a bit more significant because of the so many doubts that I had over so many years of not performing. You know, would I-I mean, could I do it? Would my voice be there? Would the people still pay to see me?” She went on to thank her team and the many fans who filled the concert halls and “filled her heart.”
This cream gown is nearly the exact cut of one that Barbra wore onstage during her 94’ concerts. The concert looks were inspired by a recent visit she had made to Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Barbra sketched these ideas and they were produced in collaboration with Donna Karan. This empire waist, off the shoulder gown was also designed and custom made for Barbra. It was created using silk, chiffon, crepe jersey silk and organdy. The plunging v-neck gives way to an inverted pleat which reveals four layers of cream silk organza with a lettuce hem. There is gathering at both shoulders which flows into a row of gathering on the high scoop back. Faceted silver flat back rhinestones cover the outer layer of this dress. These were perfectly complimented by her diamond necklace, resulting in an another well done elegant and glamorous signature Barbra look.
