Fans will recognize this hat from “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever” (1970). Designed by Arnold Scaasi, this hat was one of several of this shape and style worn in the film. It is extra special because it was worn while Streisand sang the title track that closes out the movie. #streisandstylefiles #scaasi #onacleardayyoucanseeforever #barbrastreisand #streisand #filmcostumes #fashionhistory #costumehistory #costumestudies
Kicking off Grammys week with this sexy, slinky go Kicking off Grammys week with this sexy, slinky gown that Barbra Streisand designed herself from art deco Egyptian Assuit shawls.
This gown was worn in 1976’s A Star is Born and again to the Grammy Awards in February 1977. Egyptian Assuit shawls are also called Tulle-bi-telli (net with metal). The name Assuit is derived from their city of origin, Asyut, Egypt. These shawls were created by threading wide needles with flat strips of metal, which were then weaved into linen or cotton netting. They were then flattened, hammered, or rolled to achieve the desired effect. The Art Deco period saw a surge in Egyptian motifs and Assuit shawl popularity after the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922. Streisand’s idea of creating a gown from these shawls was executed to perfection. The end result was a shimmering, figure-hugging gown featuring a square neckline with two delicate silver spaghetti straps. There is a low scoop back with a concealed zipper and hook and eye closure. The bodice is lined in silk chiffon and there is velvet lining at the décolletage. Two front panels are draped on the bias, creating depth at the front hem. There is a thigh-high slit on the left side with a gathering at the slit’s back opening. The flowing shawl worn over the gown features a more dense motif of Egyptian symbols in horizontal rows. This drapes in two symmetrical panels down the front, with sleeves touching just below the elbow. The back neckline of the shawl is square, reflecting the neckline at the front of the gown. This look was completed with a matching silver choker, a small silver purse with diamond motifs, and chunky ankle strap block heels. #grammys #grammysfashion #grammyawards2023 #streisandstylefiles #barbrastreisand #artdeco #streisand
Happy Lunar New Year! Since it is the year of the Happy Lunar New Year! Since it is the year of the rabbit, I wanted to share a moment when Barbra Streisand wore one of the most iconic rabbit images in the world! This famous Playboy symbol appeared on her babydoll T-shirt on the cover of the Oct. 1977 Playboy magazine. During her photo shoot with Mario Casilli, Streisand donned this look as an homage to her recent “Superman” outfit which was seen both in “A Star is Born” and on her “Superman”album cover. White hot pants, striped tube socks, and white Keds completed her sexy Playboy look.

Streisand was the first major celebrity to appear on a Playboy cover since Marilyn Monroe, and the Lawrence Grobel interview that accompanied her photos was collected over the course of nine months using 52 hours of tapes. When photographer Mario Casilli died in 2002, Streisand’s Playboy T-shirt was one of the several items discovered from this shoot. It sold alongside the round lighting prop and seven color Kodachrome transparencies for $768.00. 🐰
The year of the rabbit ushers in a calmer and softer period in which peace can flourish. This tranquil energy encourages rest, reflection, thoughtfulness, and intellect. I hope we can all harness this energy for a calm and meaningful new year! #happylunarnewyear #yearoftherabbit #lunarnewyear #barbrastreisand #streisand #playboy #streisandstylefiles #barbra #1970sfashion #fashionhistory
Barbra Streisand wore this conservative and quinte Barbra Streisand wore this conservative and quintessentially 1980’s dress during a courtroom scene in “Nuts” (1987). To prepare for the role of Claudia, Barbra did research by visiting schizophrenic patients in psych wards as well as interviewing prostitutes at a Los Angeles brothel. Costumes for “Nuts” were designed by Joe I. Tompkins, who garnered two Oscar nominations during his career, and won two Emmy Awards.
Some fans call this costume the “Mommy dress”, referencing a bit from the script when Aaron Levinsky tells Claudia “You look wonderful”, and she replies “You know what I use this dress for? For the ones who want to sit on Mommy’s lap.” 😬🫣The dress was paired with a black sweater vest, giving it an even frumpier vibe. It is tea-length and made from a lightweight wool blend. The entire dress features a scattered paisley motif. The high turtleneck collar was accented with a gold oval brooch, presumably from Streisand’s personal jewelry collection. There are exaggerated shoulder pads, two side seam pockets, and long sleeves with elastic ruching at the cuffs. The back of the dress has a zipper closure. This costume sold at auction in 2004 for $875.00. #streisandstylefiles #barbrastreisand #streisand #nuts #filmcostumes #barbra #costumehistory #fashionhistory
