Barbra Streisand was celebrated as one of 29 Broadway icons featured in New York’s Legends of Broadway edition, honoring her groundbreaking performance as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl. In the accompanying article, Streisand reflects on the profound connection she felt with Brice while reading transcripts shared with her by Columbia Records head Goddard Lieberson. “I was staggered by how much we were alike,” she recalled, “down to the colors we liked to wear.”

The piece is accompanied by a striking new portrait of Streisand, posed alongside two original Funny Girl gowns designed by the legendary Irene Sharaff. In it, Streisand wears a showstopping peach cape, lavishly adorned with ostrich feathers and embellished with delicate floral embroidery throughout shimmering silk.

With a gentle touch, she connects to the iconic dress worn during her performance of “People” in the original Broadway production. Beside it stands the gown from the Funny Girl film, featured in the poignant scene where Fanny awaits Nick’s marriage proposal. The headband from this costume is displayed around the mannequin’s neck as a choker, while the veil-like piece appears to be an accessory unseen in the film. Also visible in the photo is a striking 1930s-style embroidered fur, which is likely another Irene Sharaff creation designed for Funny Girl.

On the cover of the magazine, Streisand wears Eugenia Kim’s honey wool felt round-crown hat ($445), and a black button up blouse also by Eugenia Kim. The cape and jewelry are Streisand’s own. Her hair was styled by Soonie Pak with creative direction by Chris McMillan, who most famously created “the Rachel” haircut. Makeup artist Amy Oresman used Tom Ford Beauty for the look, with skin preparation by Clé de Peau Beauté.

In her book My Passion For Design, Streisand notes that while the “People” gown seen in the photo with isn’t quite as elaborate as the film version, it is the one she prefers (p.217).
